Match report of the 2015 final of the Cricketer Trophy. Old Monmothians v Old Hurst Johnians.
The day of the final dawned hot and sunny, a complete contrast to the rain affected final of last year. The Hurst Johnians won the toss and asked the Monmothians to bat first on what looked a very good batting wicket. They got off to a good start against a steady opening attack putting on 45 for the 1st wicket. Thereafter the Hurst Johnian's attack became erratic and Lawlor (78), James (67) and Denning (76) all batted in a dominating manner to help post a very competitive total of 322. Wright had the best bowling figures in the circumstances of 3 for 34, and mention must be made of 3 very good catches in the deep by Viggor.
In reply to such a large total the Hurst Johnian innings got off to a poor start and they were soon 40 for 4 before Ludlow(50) and Meredith(35) added some respectability with a useful stand of 60 for the fifth wicket. However when Ludlow, who had scored 4 hundreds in the previous week, was out sweeping all hope of a competitive total vanished, and the Hurst Johnians were all out for 131, with their last 5 wickets falling for only 30 runs. The Monmothians bowled and fielded very professionally with Warwick taking 4 for 34, and they well deserved their victory by 191 runs.
Mention should be made of the fact that 3 of the Hurst Johnian side were playing for the Sussex Acadamy who would not release them for the day, and thus they were a considerably weakened team from the one that had played in the previous rounds.
Thanks are due to the officers of the competition for organising the day so efficiently, and to Gerrards Cross CC and their staff for making the day so enjoyable for the players, officials, and the 60 or so spectators.
