Old Bedfordians Charity Donation
As part of the prize for winning the Beechcroft Capital Cricketer Cup, Old Bedfordians were given the chance to donate £1000 to a charity of their choice associated with Old Bedfordian cricket.
Charlie Thurston (Old Bedfordians’ captain) writes that ‘our donation to Willen Hospice is made in memory of Peter Sowerby (74–85), a true Old Bedfordian and a passionate supporter of OB cricket throughout his life. Pete was well known and much loved for his infectious enthusiasm for the game, his unwavering loyalty to the side, and, of course, his sharp wit behind the stumps - where many a wicket fell thanks to his quick hands and quicker tongue.
One of Pete’s long-held ambitions was to help the Old Bedfordians win the Cricketer Cup. We came close in 2017, reaching the semi-final against the Old Eastbournians - a match Pete played in and one that still lives in the memory for all who were there.
Pete sadly passed away peacefully at Willen Hospice in 2018, after a brief but brave battle with prostate cancer. His absence is still deeply felt, both on and off the field, but his spirit lives on - in the laughs he shared and the legacy he left behind. It was fantastic to finally get over the line for Pete and to raise a celebratory toast to him after the game’.
