Second Round Played

The Beechbrook Capital Cricketer Cup has now advanced to the quarter-finals with all the second round matches completed yesterday.

The best game of the day came at Malvern, where arch-rivals Old Tonbridgians prevailed by just 4 runs. Tonbridge scored 206 in their 50 overs, Ben Robinson top-scoring with 54 and newcomer Will Roxburgh 36 not out. Josh Haynes took 4-37, but was dismissed early in the Malvern innings who reached 141-3 thanks to 50 from Freddie Wynn. Wickets then fell steadily and the ninth Malvern pair could only get 8 of the 12 needed in the last over. Sam Hadfield bowled a particularly good spell of 2-19 in his 10 overs. Tonbridge now travel to Repton who had a big win at Eton. The Pilgrims made 226 with Callum Brodrick 89 and Will Tarrant 55 making the bulk of the runs. Will Vanderspar took 5-43 and then made 54 for the Ramblers who fell 64 runs short. Henry Eldred followed his 36 in the Repton innings with 6-29 opening the bowling.

In the bottom quarter, Bradfield Waifs had a relatively comfortable win at Hampton. The home side was dismissed for 202, Tom Ettridge taking 4-38. In reply the Waifs reached 103-1 but then slumped to 105-5 before Shelvin Gumbs with 54 guided them home with more than 10 overs to spare, Matt Avant-Smith taking 4-41. The Waifs now host Old Millfieldians in a blockbuster game on 13 July. Millfield dismissed Old Cheltonians for 186, Ben Ringrose top-scoring with 78, then won by 4 wickets with 16 overs to spare.

In the top quarter of the draw, Stowe Templars pulled off a surprisingly easy win against Charterhouse Friars. Stowe made 226, with Wilf Pickard making 65 and he then took 3-25 as the Friars were bowled out for 171. They now host Old Bedfordians who had a rampant win at Sherborne. The Pilgrims made a respectable score of 226, but the Bedford openers chased this down in only 32 overs to win by 10 wickets, Michael Wells making 102 and Ewan Cox 108.

The second quarter will see a match at Cranleigh between Old Cranleighans and Old Cliftonians. Cranleigh chased a Radley score of 273 to win by 6 wickets with four overs to spare. Alan Cope with 88 and George Ealham 112 not out did most of the damage, after Morgan Barnes and Will Carr had pulled Radley out of a hole with an 8th wicket partnership of 106. Old Cliftonians travelled all the way to Eastbourne and won by 73 runs. Jonny Sadler with 66 and Louie Shaw 71 not out were the top scorers. Old Eastbournians were never in the hunt, although opener Hunter made 62 and Ben Twine a late flourish with 45.
