Tony Winlaw

The death has been announced of Tony Winlaw, who was President of the Cricketer Cup from 2017-20. It was Tony and Henry Lewis who conceived the idea of a knockout cup for old boy teams in 1966, an idea enthusiastically embraced by EW Swanton and Ben Brocklehurst, owner of The Cricketer magazine which sponsored the new competition. Tony played cricket for Harrow and was an enthusiastic Harrow Wanderer, as well as membership of the Arabs and IZ. . Swanton was his mentor at the Daily Telegraph, where he was a cricket, rackets and rugby reporter for many years, before becoming a handicapper in NH racing. He had a host of friends in cricket and will be sorely missed.
